Former Red Sox manager Jimy Williams dies at 80

Former Boston Red Sox manager Jimy Williams passed away on Friday at the age of 80 in Florida after a brief illness, the team announced Monday.

Williams managed the Red Sox for parts of five seasons from 1997-2001, compiling a 414-352 (.540) record. He ranks eighth on the franchise's all-time managerial games and wins lists.

Williams finished second in American League Manager of the Year voting in 1998 and then won the award in 1999. The Red Sox made the playoffs both of those seasons and reached the American League Championship Series in 1999.

Williams also managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 1986-89 and the Houston Astros from 2002-04. He won two World Series, one as the third base coach for the Atlanta Braves in 1995 and another as the bench coach for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008.

Williams is survived by his wife of 47 years, Peggy, as well as his sons, Shawn and Brady, his daughters, Monica Farr and Jenna Williams, and his eight grandchildren.
