It was quite a Sunday for Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer.

The 36-year-old right-hander looked to be in vintage form as he tossed a complete game to finish off a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins, striking out nine and allowing just one run in the 3-1 win.

The performance lowered Scherzer’s ERA to 2.54 and also moved the Nationals into first place in the NL East, too.

But Scherzer’s day was really just getting started after the final out was recorded.

The Nationals ace had to blow off his postgame press conference because his wife, Erica, went into labor and he was leaving the ballpark to go be with her at the hospital.

Certainly, this will be a day Scherzer will not forget and will make for quite the story to tell their newborn child in the future.
