The Pirates are responding after Boston Red Sox color commentator and Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley’s comments earlier this week about the team.

Eckersley said the Pirates had a “no-name” lineup and were a “hodgepodge of nothingness.”

Pirates center fielder Bryan Reynolds said of the comments, “I could give any less of a crap what that guy has to say.”

Reynolds shows how much he didn’t care about the comments by belting a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning on Wednesday to open up the game’s scoring. The Pirates would go on to lose 8-3.

Pirates pitcher Wil Crowe was disappointed that a former player would go after other players.

“I think it was kind of crappy and bush league,” said Crowe

Voice of the Pirates Greg Brown joined The PM Team with Poni and Mueller Wednesday and said he believes that calling the lineup “no-name” isn’t really critical and more stating a fact.

Brown says unless you’re a Pirates fan, you likely wouldn’t recognize a lot of the names currently in the Pirates everyday lineup.

What Brown did have an issue with was the comments that the Pirates have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball.

“What’s more ridiculous, a team with one of the lowest payrolls in baseball that is in last place in the National League Central Division or a team with the fifth or sixth highest payroll in baseball and is under .500 (and last place in their division),” said Brown.

Brown says he respects Eckersley, but when the roles were the reversed in 2014, the Pirates broadcasters did say anything like that.

Brown also says Eckersley is misplaced when he says that they’re just throwing a bunch of young players out on the field. HE doesn’t agree that the entire roster/lineup is a “hodgepodge of nothingness” because there are recognizable players.

Another thing, Eckersley is retiring after the season and Browns speculates maybe he doesn’t care what he says, since he’ll be done soon.
