A 5-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his 12-year-old brother with a gun he found in the woods, Griffin Police say.
Police say the boy said in a statement obtained during and interview at the Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center, which specializes in interviewing children, he found the gun and thought it was a toy.
He found the gun in an area officers had previously in the day located a suspected bag of drugs after a traffic stop. Police said they didn't find a weapon in the area at the time of that investigation.
In the statement, the boy said accidentally fired the gun and hit his brother in the chest. The 12-year-old victim eventually died from the wound.
Police said, in a new release, that other witness accounts corroborate the 5-year-olds statement.
Griffin Police said, in the new release, they are still investigating the incident and are searching for the party responsible for the abandoning the gun.
"We will leave no stone unturned as we search for the individuals responsible for the abandonment of this weapon," Griffin chief Mike Yates said in the release.
