Recently on The WAOK Morning Show, special guest host Shar Bates, spoke with Film producer and prominent figure from Love and Hip Hop Yandy Smith about her community-focused event, "Yell for the Culture." This initiative aims to combine Atlanta's vibrant hip-hop scene with activism, particularly around voter registration and education.
Yell for the Culture has evolved to become a platform that not only celebrates music but also promotes civic engagement. The latest iteration, themed "Hip Hop to Vote," gathered artists, influencers, and community members to emphasize the importance of voting in Georgia. Ms. Smith shared that the event featured free resources rather than typical vendor offerings, focusing on services that directly benefit attendees. This included support for individuals recently released from incarceration, housing assistance, and health services, such as physicals and STD testing.
The partnership with local organizations, including Barred Business, highlighted the event's commitment to educating the community about voting rights. Ms. Smith noted the importance of informing justice-impacted individuals that they can register to vote in Georgia, even if they are still on probation.
Looking ahead, Ms. Smith announced that the next Yell for the Culture event is scheduled for October 26. This upcoming gathering will shift its focus to the significance of voting, coinciding with the start of early voting in Georgia. The event aims to empower attendees not only to register but also to understand the implications of their vote.
Ms. Smith also stressed the importance of raising awareness about available community resources, including grants and housing assistance. Many individuals remain unaware of these opportunities, which often go untapped.
