Conversations around growth, purpose and personal development are taking center stage in a new release featuring an emerging artist and a respected name in hip-hop.

The track, “Grow With Me,” pairs Wes Lee The Wordsmith with Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins, blending reflective storytelling with a message rooted in self-improvement. In a recent interview on Behind the Mic, Wes Lee discussed the inspiration behind the record and the experiences that continue to shape his music.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, the Recording Academy member said his journey has always been grounded in personal growth.

“I was dedicated to growing through situations, not just going through situations,” he said.

That mindset has become a central theme in both his life and his art. He emphasized the importance of not just adapting to environments, but actively shaping them.

“You have to be the individual that controls the temperature of the environment, not just somebody that is feeling or measuring the temperature that somebody else sets,” he said. “Don’t just respond to what else is going on, but create a space where people respond in a way that's better than how they would when you were not present.”

The record also reflects a more personal evolution, particularly as fatherhood continues to influence his perspective. The track opens with a contribution from his son, a decision that came from real-life conversations.

“Fatherhood has been one of the most monumental aspects of my journey,” he said. “You go from being this seed that needs to be protected… to then ultimately being this tree that serves as the pillar to provide those same things to your own seeds.”

Collaborating with Mick Jenkins marked a milestone, bringing together an artist he has long respected with his own growing platform.

“When I got the verse back, it was like, ‘Wow, you know, I did it,’” he said. “But I also wanted to make sure I held my own.”

Beyond the collaboration, Wes Lee continues to build through Bonzeye Productions, a creative collective focused on intentional artistry and community-driven work. He said maintaining perspective and gratitude remains essential as his career progresses.

“You always have to stay connected to your roots,” he said. “If your roots get brittle… your circulation of nutrition is diminished.”

As the record gains traction, he said the focus remains on growth, both personally and creatively.

“Grow With Me,” featuring Mick Jenkins, is now available on all major streaming platforms.
