In a recent interview on News & Talk 1380 WAOK, guest host Councilmember Michael Julian Bond engaged in a compelling conversation with Champ Walker, CEO of Friends of the Movement Global (FOTM). Their discussion centered on FOTM's innovative approach to economic empowerment within the Black community.
Mr. Walker introduced FOTM's groundbreaking initiative, a "conscious spending platform" designed to track and amplify the financial impact of Black consumers and their allies. Referred to as the "Black Wall Street Spending Ticker," this platform aims to transparently showcase where Black dollars are spent and how much support Black-owned businesses receive from allies.
Since its inception in March, FOTM has made significant progress, with over 5,000 businesses added to its platform and partnerships established with organizations like Reach TV and Operation HOPE. Plans are underway to expand the initiative's reach to 90 airports nationwide and collaborate with the National Newspaper Publishers Association, signaling a growing momentum for economic empowerment.
Mr. Walker emphasized the importance of conscious consumerism, urging individuals to support businesses that have pledged to uplift the Black community. By redirecting spending towards these "friends of the movement," consumers can drive economic growth and foster generational wealth within their communities.
