This week on, On Point with Juandolyn Stokes, Dr. Geoffrey continued his discussion on Erectile Dysfunction (ED) on Medical Mondays. The topic was so popular last week the audience demanded a part two.
ED is defined as an inability to get or maintain an erection, which is an increased blood flow long enough to enjoy sex. Obviously, this condition is not only embarrassing, but also frustrating for men who suffer from this disorder.
Dr. Geoffrey said, "52% of men over 40 experience some type of ED."
According to Dr. Geoffrey, there are several potential factors that can cause impotence including high blood pressure, obesity, especially in the pelvic area, beta blockers, certain over-the-counter medicines, smoking, diabetes, and some cancer treatments.
Some possible remedies include improved diet and exercise and medications including Viagra or Cialis.
Dr. Geoffrey does caution against young men who do not need these medicines but take them anyway because they put themselves at risk for being unable to use them successfully when they get older and do need them.
Obesity as a cause for ED, produces estrogen and decreases a man's libido, says Dr. Geoffrey.
Another condition Dr. Geoffrey discussed is a fractured penis, which is a painful condition that must be fixed surgically; it occurs most often during sex when the woman is on top.
