Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22. According to Earthday.org , the day "engages more than 1 billion people every year and has become a major stepping stone along the pathway of engagement around the protection of the planet."

Keeping the Chattahoochee River clean is among the many efforts aimed at protecting the planet. According to Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Jason Ulseth, "We have to do everything that we can as individuals and as a community to protect that river as best we can for now and future generations."

Ulseth and his team are located in Atlanta.

Ulseth says 35 tons of trash and litter were removed from the waterway during Sweep the Hooch last month. The event is an annual trash cleanup of parks, tributaries, and access points along the Chattahoochee River.

Earth Day events are being held in metro Atlanta, including at Atlanta Botanical Garden, Omni International School, Gwinnett County Fairgrounds, Sope Creek Trail, and in the City of South Fulton.
