On November 5th the highly anticipated Astroworld Festival run by Houston native Travis Scott at NRG Park was taking on its first day of the two-day festival. The festival originally began in 2018 while going on hiatus because of COVID-19 in 2020. The anticipation for the 2021 festival was rather high as the music world continues to open up again.
The festival holds amusement rides and games, slightly mimicking the original six-flag Astroworld in Houston, Texas with a “Travis Scott” twist.
The Voices in the Streets Unfiltered hosts gets an eyewitness account of what happened at the Astroworld Music Festival the night of the 8 fatal deaths and 100s injured. We caught up with Charles Alford, who gave us a timeline of the night that led to the tragic events. The stage that hosted Travis Scott’s performance described as some parts “muddy, uneven wood paneling and plastic plates and wood chips on the ground, said Charles Alford. He continues to describe that as he made his way to the front of the stage and the crowd felt like “fluid...just movement and you have no real control over your body”. Weighing at about 200 plus pounds, Charles states his instinct was to open some space up and as he did, it immediately compressed back up as if water was filling up a crack in the floors. He expressed that many complained, but he did not see this as any different from any other concert he has attended. By 8:15 pm, with 30 minutes left until Travis Scott’s performance, the swaying and body movement of everyone got worse and people collapsed at that point.
