This week, On Point with Juandolyn Stokes welcomed Domestic Violence Awareness Advocate, Speaker, and CEO, Lisa Jenkins.
Jenkins is currently the CEO of Kingdom Builder’s Family Life Center, an organization she founded in 2013. Ultimately, she plans to open domestic violence transitional housing for women and their children and a Home Away from Home safe house for children.
Jenkins said it was her own desire to live for herself and her children that forced her to seek the help of a relative who lived out of state when she decided to leave her abusive relationship.
This is one of the services she offers to others seeking help who are planning their own escapes. Additionally, she offers help for those suffering from sexual assault, human trafficking, or those who need education, or counseling services.
Jenkins says women can overlook red flag controlling or possessive behaviors like excessive calling or checking up because they think it’s wonderful.
“Individuals confuse love with control,” she added.
“Abuse is a learned behavior," said Jenkins. She cautions that all abuse is not physical.
Men do not fit the stereotype for domestic violence, but they can be victims too. According to Jenkins their abuse is usually emotional, controlling, or threatening.
Although Kingdom Builders Family Life Center is in Colorado, they can assist people who need safety plans or other services in other states.
