This week on, On Point with Juandolyn Stokes welcomed Keith Milner of "100 Black Men of Atlanta's to share about their upcoming signature fundraiser event, their Honor's Gala to Laud Leaders, Raise Funds for Memberships. The event takes place on Saturday, June 24 at the Onmi Atlanta Hotel.
According to Milner, young Black men must realize they are a product of the history of America and the systemic racism is part of life. With that, they must take personal accountability by knowing the rules of games, play to their advantage.
"100 Black Men of Atlanta" seeks to increase financial literacy, teach young men all about credit-managing it and using it wisely for things that appreciate instead clothes and shoes, says Milner.
Milner added, "So many things are out their [young Black men] control, but we teach them not to have a victim mentality, but to have a growth mindset, get an education, and to avoid trouble and violence."
"Too many young men are preoccupied with celebrities and sports. We try to expose them to the business side behind the artist, producing, owning the intellectual properties, and recognizing there are other ways to make money," Milner said.
According to Milner, numerous studies support positive role models: What they see, they will be. It is important for young men to realize what they can control and "100 Black Men of Atlanta" shows them how they can start by connecting with real people.
"100 Black Men of Atlanta" doesn't just help young Black men, but women too.
"40% of our mentees are women," said Milner.
The theme of this year's gala is "Empowering Our Youth." A few of the honoree's include Jermaine Dupri, CEO of So So Def Records, Jay Bailey, President and CEO of Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE), and Dr. Kevin James, Ed.D., President of Morris Brown College.
R&B singer, Will Downing will be part of the entertainment.
