2026 Toyota bZ and bZ Woodland Review: A Bold Reboot for Toyota's EV Vision

2026 Toyota bZ and bZ Woodland
Daryl Killian

I was in Plano, Texas, last week for Toyota's annual HQ Confidential event—a showcase that feels more like a crystal ball reading for the future of electrified mobility than a typical press drive. Held on their sprawling campus, the multi-day experience gave media access to product planners, engineers, designers, and the full range of Toyota and Lexus's electrified lineup. From concept mobility scooters to the new RAV4 GR, the event was packed. But for me, the biggest pivot wasn't what was new—it was what got dropped: the "4X."

Toyota has rebranded the awkwardly named bZ4X simply as the 2026 Toyota bZ—a much-needed simplification that reflects a cleaner identity and more confident design language. Also debuting was the all-new bZ Woodland, Toyota's electric answer for off-road adventure seekers who want torque, tech, and trail readiness.

Refined, Recharged, and Finally Competitive
Let's start with the standard 2026 bZ. Gone is the polarizing design that made it resemble an anime crossover in its base trim. Toyota wisely color-matched the cladding on most grades, which cleans up the lines and helps it blend in with the more refined EV crowd. However, what truly changes the narrative is what's under the skin: a 25% increase in EV range, up to 314 miles on the XLE FWD Plus with the larger 74.7-kWh battery pack.

Charging has gotten smarter, too. The addition of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) means bZ drivers now have access to the Tesla Supercharger network and other DC fast chargers. Pair that with Plug & Charge capability—no apps, no swipe cards—and you've got a much more seamless EV ownership experience. Under ideal conditions, you're looking at a 10–80% DC fast charge in about 30 minutes.

Performance? Toyota beefed things up. FWD models now top out at 221 hp, but AWD versions leap to 338 hp, shaving 0–60 mph times down to 4.9 seconds. That's not just competitive—it's fun.

Interior: More Lexus Than Legacy Toyota
Inside, the bZ adopts the luxury-lite formula that Toyota's been leaning into across its lineup. The standard features include a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, dual wireless chargers, 64-color ambient lighting, and multiple USB-C ports. The Limited trim dials it up further with ventilated front seats, panoramic roof, JBL premium audio, and Advanced Park for those who hate parallel parking.

The cargo space is a respectable 27.7 cubic feet, and rear legroom measures 35.3 inches.

bZ Woodland: For the Trail-Ready Techie
Then there's the 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland, a new trim that takes the bZ formula off the beaten path—literally. It's taller, longer, more aggressive, and boasts a 375 hp AWD system paired with an X-MODE off-road system, 3,500 lbs. towing capacity.

While the range drops slightly to 260 miles, Toyota compensates with rugged hardware, including roof rails, a Multi-Terrain Monitor, 18-inch wheels with available All-Terrain tires, and an extra inch of ground clearance over the standard bZ (8.3 inches total).

Some of the hardcore off-roaders on the trip reminded us that most major trails in the U.S., like Moab, have public charging stations near the trailhead. When I asked if 260 miles was enough for real-world overlanding, they made a good point: "Anyone doing over 100 miles of trail in a single day is an overachiever." Truth is, most folks won't come close to pushing those limits.

Visually, I prefer the larger Woodland body size. It makes the bZ feel more mature. That said, I do wish they offered the Woodland's dimensions with the cleaner, road-oriented style and wheels of the standard bZ. But you can't have everything.

Final Word: Is the 2026 bZ Worth It?
Toyota's EV evolution is no longer crawling—it's charging. Literally. With NACS adoption, better battery chemistry, and trims like the bZ Woodland targeting real niche audiences, the brand may have found its stride in the electric space. The standard bZ is perfect for tech-forward commuters and families, while the Woodland answers the call of weekend warriors who want adventure without emissions.

It may have taken a minute, but Toyota's back in the EV game—and they're finally showing they can lead, not just follow.
