Recently on "Let's Talk About It With The Turner's" Host Rob and Vickie Turner spoke with Representative Billy Mitchell about how he has been instrumental in shaping policies that address the needs of underserved communities across Georgia.

Representative Mitchell began his public service career on the local level in Stone Mountain, where he was elected to the city council after completing law school. He served as vice mayor during a pivotal time in the city's history, and his work laid the foundation for his future success in Georgia's state legislature. In 2002, Representative Mitchell ran for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives, where he has since become a prominent leader in the state government.
Throughout his tenure, Representative Mitchell has held numerous influential positions, including serving as secretary of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and becoming the first freshman legislator to be appointed to the Georgia Recreational Overview Committee. He also serves on the Health and Human Services Committee, as well as the Banks and Banking and Regulated Industries Committee, where he continues to make a significant impact.
A central focus of Representative Mitchell's legislative work has been healthcare. He has long advocated for the expansion of Medicaid in Georgia, stressing the importance of providing healthcare access to those who are uninsured or underinsured. He highlighted the struggles faced by hospitals, especially in rural areas, which are often the largest employers in these communities. Without Medicaid expansion, many hospitals are at risk of closing, leaving residents with limited access to care. Representative Mitchell also pointed out the economic impact of hospital closures on local businesses and communities, particularly in underserved regions of the state.
Representative Mitchell's influence extends beyond Georgia's borders. He serves on the executive board of the National Council of State Legislators and is the immediate past president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. These roles allow him to advocate for issues affecting Black communities and work on a national scale to improve legislative policies.
Despite the challenges, Representative Mitchell remains optimistic about the future. He believes that staying engaged and informed is crucial for improving the lives of Georgia residents. Representative Mitchell encourages people to be active participants in their local communities and elections, emphasizing that the decisions made at the local level have a direct impact on daily life.
