On a recent segment of the Wake Up With Dee Morning Show on News & Talk WAOK, host Dr. Dee Dawkins-Haigler sat down with the visionary women behind the SheSpeaks podcast—Alana Sanders, Maya Allen, and Dietra Butler.
Born out of a shared passion for leadership and social change, SheSpeaks provides a dedicated platform to examine societal issues, corporate realities, and personal growth through the authentic lens of Black women.
How 'SheSpeaks' Came to Be
The trio first connected through an initiative designed to train women for leadership and local public office. After sharing their personal experiences navigating corporate spaces, public service, and community involvement, they identified a clear need for transparent, unfiltered dialogue.
- Alana Sanders: A former Newton County Commissioner and the first Black woman elected to a county seat in her district, Alana brings deep local government experience to the podcast.
- Maya Allen: A long-time community leader based in Georgia, Maya joined the initiative seeking to commune with like-minded women striving for community transformation.
- Dietra Butler: A practicing attorney, child advocate, and former juvenile court judge with over 15 years of judicial experience, Dietra offers key legal and advocacy insights.
Breaking Stereotypes & Fostering Community
SheSpeaks addresses topics ranging from motherhood and workplace dynamics to challenging prevailing societal tropes—such as the "strong Black woman" narrative. By hosting live bi-weekly shows, the co-hosts create a safe space for listeners to join the conversation, share solutions, and unpack misconceptions.
Upcoming Live Episodes:
- "SheSpeaks for Our Children": Discussing parenting, guiding children through race relations, and preserving Black history.
- "Let Us Breathe": Exploring mental health, therapy, rest, and releasing the burden of having to hold everything together.
