The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) recently hosted a heartwarming winter graduation ceremony to honor the remarkable academic achievements of the youth in the DJJ School System. The event took place on December 14th at the Anderson Conference Center in Macon, Georgia, where students were awarded a total of 23 high school diplomas, 22 GED diplomas, and seven Technical Certificates of Credit (TCC).
Commissioner Shawanda Reynolds-Cobb of the DJJ expressed her immense joy in celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of the young graduates. She emphasized the pivotal role of education in the DJJ's mission to rehabilitate and transform the lives of the youth in their care. The graduation ceremony symbolized a significant milestone in their lives, providing them with a renewed sense of hope for a brighter future. Reynolds-Cobb extended her gratitude to the dedicated team of educators whose unwavering commitment played a vital role in encouraging the youth to reach their goals.
Serving as the 181st school district in Georgia, the DJJ operates its own educational institutions, including the Georgia Preparatory Academy (GPA) for middle and high school education, as well as the Pathway to Success program, which offers a comprehensive GED curriculum. These educational facilities are located across 28 DJJ campuses throughout Georgia, spanning Regional Youth Detention Centers (RYDCs), Youth Development Campuses (YDCs), and Education Transition Centers (ETCs). The curriculum at GPA adheres to the education standards regulated by the Georgia Department of Education, ensuring that students receive a quality education on par with that of public schools.
The commencement speaker at the ceremony was Ladji Ruffin, a Forensic Peer Mentor/Trainer associated with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD). Ruffin captivated the audience with his own personal journey, illustrating his transformation from a life sentence to creating valuable post-incarceration access to supportive services for individuals affected by the criminal justice system. His story served as an inspiration, demonstrating the profound impact turning one's life around can have.
Ruffin eloquently stated, "It was important to share my story because it shows youth where I came from and how I turned my life around. These youth now have the tools and support they need to take command of their future and navigate through society."
The DJJ collaborates with the Technical College System of Georgia to offer the GED program, along with the Connections Graduate Program (CGP), designed to equip graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge for future college or career opportunities. Students enrolled in the CGP earned valuable certifications in a range of fields, including Barbering Fundamentals, Construction Work, Nursery/Greenhouse Technology, and Prep Cook. These programs are designed to ensure that the youth are well-prepared for success as they reintegrate into their communities.
Zane Shelfer, DJJ Deputy Superintendent of Schools, expressed his enthusiasm for the positive impact the earned diplomas and technical certificates will undoubtedly have on the students' future endeavors. Shelfer highlighted that these achievements will open doors to higher education and lucrative employment opportunities, empowering the graduates to thrive further in their lives.
