Pastors Chip and Lillian Owens brought humor, honesty and practical wisdom to Couples Cafe as they reflected on the foundation of their 16-year marriage and the values that continue to guide their family.

The couple joined Let’s Talk About It With the Turners to discuss love, communication, courtship and the intentional decisions that helped shape their relationship. Married for 16 years and together for 19, the Owenses are raising three children while serving in ministry and building a life centered on faith, friendship and long-term planning.

Their story began with a family connection that predated their own relationship. The couple shared that their mothers, both active in ministry and both members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, built a friendship in Huntsville, Alabama, years before Chip and Lillian formally connected. That bond, they said, helped create a meaningful backdrop for their own relationship.

During the interview, the couple stressed that one of the most important parts of their marriage has been communication. Chip Owens described communication as the foundation of how they solve problems, understand one another and stay connected through different seasons of life.

For us, it’s communication,” he said. “I have the distinct honor and pleasure to have married my best friend.”

The couple said that approach began before marriage. Rather than focusing heavily on traditional dating, they used their courtship to learn how each person handled real life. Lillian Owens said they never went on a one-on-one date before getting married, choosing instead to spend time getting to know one another’s character, family dynamics and responses to life’s challenges.

We never went on one date, one-on-one,” she said. “I wanted to know the sunshine and the rain.”

That decision, she explained, was rooted in a desire for substance over presentation. Instead of trying to impress one another with appearances or expensive outings, they focused on whether they were truly compatible and prepared to build a future together.

They also spoke candidly about finances, saying they were intentional about thinking ahead even before marriage. While still in college, they opened a joint bank account as an early step toward shared responsibility and a common vision. In the years since, that same mindset has expanded into a focus on generational wealth, property ownership and building a legacy for their children and future descendants.

They said that kind of planning is part of the larger lesson they hope to pass down, marriage is not only about romance, but also about partnership, sacrifice and wise stewardship.

The couple also encouraged young couples to think carefully about how they communicate during disagreements. Chip Owens emphasized active listening, while Lillian Owens urged couples to pay attention to who a person is beneath the polished surface.
