Recently on "let's Talk About It" world-renowned hairstylist and entrepreneur Jakki Dee joined the program to discuss the beauty industry and beyond.
With over 38 years in the beauty industry, Mr. Dee is best known for founding the JAKKI Colours Concept Salon in Atlanta's Buckhead district. His journey into beauty began after serving in the Marine Corps when he sought a career that allowed him to connect more closely with people. Despite facing challenges, including being the only person of color in his initial salon environment, Mr. Dee persevered and has since built a thriving business.
Throughout his career, Mr. Dee has diversified his impact by advocating for social justice, founding the Small Business Channel, and leading initiatives like the National Voter Registration Drive. He emphasizes the importance of empowering communities and fostering economic opportunities for underrepresented populations.
The interview also touched on the current state of the beauty industry, where Mr. Dee highlighted a significant disparity in ownership and influence. For example, the beauty industry as a whole generates over $100 billion, but people of color collectively control a mere $2 billion of that market. Mr. Dee pointed to a need for greater education and collaboration within the industry to address these disparities.
In addition to his work in hair and beauty, Mr. Dee is also the creator of Beauty Water, a premium hydration product aimed at addressing health issues, particularly dehydration within the African American community. He noted the importance of hydration for overall health and wellness, especially concerning chronic conditions that affect many in the community.
Mr. Dee believes that education is crucial for both beauty professionals and clients alike, as many people lack essential knowledge about proper hair care and health practices. He is committed to providing resources and training to help navigate these challenges effectively.
