The Omega Lamplighters program, which began in Columbus, Georgia, has seen significant growth under Mr. Broadwater's leadership. Initially focused on mentoring high school students, the program now serves middle and elementary school students, with plans to expand further. Mr. Broadwater announced that the program has grown from 17 participants to 51 young men in just one year, with plans to reach 100 participants in the coming year. The program emphasizes key life skills such as scholarship, perseverance, and maturity, aiming to provide young men with the tools they need for success.
In addition to his work with Omega Lamplighters, Mr. Broadwater also discussed his involvement in the "Fatherhood Conversation" initiative. Launched through a partnership with the Georgia Department of Human Services, the program aims to help men—particularly those facing challenges such as child support issues or a criminal background—find stable employment, further their education, and reintegrate into society. The program has provided critical support for men struggling to navigate life's obstacles, helping them secure jobs and even return to school for additional certifications.
Mr. Broadwater emphasized the importance of mentorship in his life and career, noting that as a 64-year-old man, his focus is now on giving back and helping younger generations succeed. He believes that programs like Omega Lamplighters and the Fatherhood Conversation are vital to helping men overcome personal and societal challenges.
Throughout the interview, Mr. Broadwater highlighted the need for men in the community to be aware of available resources, noting that many people remain unaware of the programs designed to help them. He shared that even small changes in one's circumstances, such as regaining a driver's license or finding steady employment, can have a profound impact on an individual's life and future.
Mr. Broadwater also touched on his military background, explaining how his experience in service shaped his outlook on leadership and the importance of giving back to others. He emphasized that the work he does now is not about politics or personal gain but about improving the community and ensuring that the next generation has the opportunity to thrive.
