Recently on "Let's Talk About It with The Turner's" CEO of DeKalb County Michael Thurmond joined the program to discuss his remarkable journey and commitment to community service, illustrating his impact over decades in public office.

Mr. Thurmond discussed his humble beginnings as the son of a Georgia sharecropper and his educational achievements, which include degrees from Paine College and the University of South Carolina, along with completion of a political executive program at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. His extensive career in public service has seen him break barriers as the first African American elected from his county to the Georgia General Assembly and achieve numerous significant legislative accomplishments.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Thurmond has made major strides in various roles, including director of the Department of Family and Children Services, where he initiated programs that helped thousands of families transition from welfare to workforce participation. He also served as the interim superintendent of the DeKalb County School System, managing a vast network of students and staff. His leadership has earned him recognition as one of Georgia’s most respected elected officials.

As CEO of DeKalb County, Mr. Thurmond has focused on rebuilding trust in local government, emphasizing transparency and accountability. He has spearheaded initiatives targeting critical issues, such as homelessness, with recent funding aimed at addressing community needs. His approach has included collaboration with various stakeholders to create effective and sustainable solutions.

During the interview, Mr. Thurmond reflected on his work ethic, attributing much of his drive to the values instilled by his parents. He expressed a commitment to serving the community until his final days in office, underscoring his belief in the importance of continuous improvement and engagement with residents.

Looking to the future, Mr. Thurmond acknowledged that there is always more to be accomplished in public service. His focus remains on ensuring progress while preparing the next generation of leadership in DeKalb County.
