Mrs. Bertha Darden, a resident of Peoplestown in Atlanta, GA passionately voiced concerns during the recent Southside Mayoral Forum. Mrs. Darden is part of a movement of residents and community allies who have been fighting the City of Atlanta to remain in their homes. Former Mayor Kasim Reed and his administration used eminent domain to take residential properties from homeowners, many of whom were elderly. Reed is running again to become mayor and Mrs. Darden wanted to know "why". According to Mrs. Darden, Reed when mayor, told her and her family that they would not have to move. After Mrs. Darden reminded Reed of his promise, Reed apologized and said he made the best decision he could based on the information at the time. According to the City, the homes needed to be destroyed to stop potential flooding disaster, however this claim has been contested by many, including a former engineer with the City of Atlanta.
