On July 1st, 2024, Georgia implemented several new laws affecting residents across the state. Attorney Erica Wilson of Fairness Firm discussed these changes on The Rashad Richey Morning Show, offering insights into their implications for Georgians.
Attorney Wilson highlighted significant updates to child support laws, emphasizing new provisions allowing adjustments for cost of living increases and extended support for children with special needs beyond the age of majority. These changes aim to provide more financial stability for families facing rising expenses.
Educational reforms were also addressed, including enhancements to the HOPE Scholarship. Effective immediately, qualifying students can now receive up to 100% tuition coverage, up from the previous 80%, easing financial burdens for higher education.
Regulatory changes impacting consumer safety were introduced under Senate Bill 494, requiring all THC products to undergo testing for THC and Delta 9 concentrations by approved vendors starting July 1st. Attorney Wilson stressed the importance of compliance with these new standards.
Employment rights saw amendments under Senate Bill 129, granting employees two hours of unpaid leave for voting in elections. This provision aims to encourage civic participation without penalizing workers.
Housing reforms under House Bill 444, known as the Safe at Home Act, mandate rental properties to meet health and safety standards and prohibit excessive security deposits. These changes are designed to protect tenants' rights and improve living conditions.
Attorney Wilson also discussed Senate Bill 55, which permits minors to operate lemonade stands without licenses or tax obligations, promoting youth entrepreneurship.
Throughout the interview, Attorney Wilson underscored the importance of understanding these new laws to ensure compliance and take advantage of their benefits. As Georgians adjust to these changes, staying informed is crucial to navigating the evolving legal landscape effectively.
