Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated said a final ’goodbye’ to its National President Cheryl Hickmon who died last month after an illness. An Omega Omega service was held for Hickmon Friday with a Celebration of Life immediately following. The services were held at The First Cathedral in Bloomfield, CT, and virtually. Omega Omega is open to members of Delta Sigma Theta.
Immediate Past President Beverly Smith tells Audacy Atlanta’s Maria Boynton that Hickmon was the first President of the organization to die while in office.
Hickmon was installed as the 27th President of the international sorority of college-educated women on November 22, 2021, in Atlanta.
“Cheryl’s life motto”, says Smith was “don’t measure life by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away.” Smith adds that Hickmon “did not measure her life by the number of breaths she took, but she did everything to make sure that she had moments in her life and moments for other people that would take their breath away.”
When she died on January 20, Hickmon was 59 years old.
