Dr. Michael Greger, physician, nutritionist, and author of "How Not to Age: The Scientific Approach to Getting Healthier as You Get Older" shared tips with On Point with Juandolyn Stokes listeners on how making healthier food choices helps you live longer.
"About 20% of our aging is due to genetics," said Greger.
He added, a diet rich in fruits, nuts, and real food that grows from the ground are our best choices.
According to Greger, hydration is also critically important with water being best followed by hibiscus and chamomile teas, and coffee. Proper hydration is a cup of water every waking hour.
"People are not drinking enough water throughout the day," added Greger.
Maintaining a diet within the "Blue Zone" of the food guide, which is 95% plant-based, maximizes our intake diet with good fats, proteins, nuts, colorful fruits, and vegetables.
Unfortunately, for 70% of people, their diets are from processed pre-packaged foods, which are leading causes of salt in the diet.
