Black History Month starts with more bomb threats at HBCUs

Spelman College is among Historically Black Colleges and Universities that were placed on lock-down and classes canceled after receiving a bomb threat. Atlanta police say they responded to the Atlanta school around 3 a.m. Tuesday and have since turned the investigation back over to campus authorities.

Bomb threats were also made at other HBCUs on the first day of Black History Month including Fort Valley State, Alcorn State, Edward Waters, Tougaloo College, Coppin State, Morgan State, Mississippi Valley, University of the District of Columbia, Jackson State, Kentucky State, Howard, and Xavier.

A number of HBCU's around the country have received bomb threats over the past month.

Albany State University received a bomb threat on Monday. The HBCU located in southwest Georgia canceled university operations for several hours. No devices were found. Students and employees were allowed to return to campus later in the day.

In a statement released in reaction to the bomb threats, the congressional HBCU caucus said "We are deeply disturbed" by the threats and that "solving these crimes and bringing those responsible to justice should be a top priority for federal law enforcement."
