Journalists were invited to the Big Island of Hawaii for a press reveal of what could be argued is the "best mid-size truck" on the road. When it comes to mid-size trucks, the Toyota Tacoma has long been the undisputed champion, earning its reputation as the "unofficial, 'official' truck of Kona Island." Affectionately known as the "Taco," the Tacoma has become synonymous with durability, off-road prowess, and practicality. Now, Toyota is taking Tacoma to new heights with the highly anticipated 2024 model.

Set to be manufactured at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plants in Baja California (TMMBC) and Guanajuato (TMMG1), the 2024 Tacoma is expected to hit the market in late 2023, with the Tacoma i-FORCE MAX variant arriving in spring 2024. While the starting MSRP will be provided closer to the launch timing, one thing is certain: the new Tacoma will be worth the wait.

So, what's new for the 2024 Tacoma? Gone is the V-6, but the standard i-FORCE turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is at the heart of the lineup, packing an impressive punch with up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. For those seeking even more power, the available i-FORCE MAX turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain takes performance to the next level, delivering a remarkable 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. of torque. If I were a betting man, I'd place all of my chips on the i-Force MAX as the fan favorite, but I'll try to remain neutral until they're available for test drives.

Toyota is also catering to the needs of off-road enthusiasts with the all-new Trailhunter, a factory-developed overlanding rig built from the ground up. Equipped with the latest integrated off-road equipment from ARB, Old Man Emu, and RIGID, the Trailhunter is ready to conquer any terrain you throw at it.

And let's not forget the Baja-inspired TRD Pro, which debuts a segment-first IsoDynamic Performance Seat. This feature is designed to enhance off-road driving control and comfort, which sets the TRD Pro apart from the competition. Speaking of comfort, the Tacoma now offers an XtraCab extended bed configuration, providing enhanced interior functionality and maximum cargo capacity.

The 2024 Tacoma is not only about power and performance; it also embraces the latest technology. An available 14-inch touchscreen showcases the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system, keeping you connected and entertained throughout your journey. Additionally, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 comes standard on all models, ensuring peace of mind with its advanced safety features.

With a range of grades to choose from, including the SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro, there's a Tacoma for every driver's needs and preferences.

When it comes to configurations, the 2024 Tacoma offers versatility. Whether you opt for the two-door XtraCab with a 6-foot bed or the four-door Double Cab with a 5-foot or 6-foot bed, you'll find the perfect setup for your lifestyle.

And let's not forget about style. The Tacoma is available in a range of eye-catching colors, including Supersonic Red, Blue Crush Metallic, Underground, Wind Chill Pearl, Solar Octane, Celestial Silver Metallic, Black, Ice Cap, and Bronze Oxide. Watch for the TRD Pro-exclusive color, which will be announced this summer.

While specific numbers are yet to be revealed, rest assured that Tacoma's towing capability will continue to impress.

When it comes to off-road capability, the Tacoma is unrivaled. Its proven drivetrains and suspensions, including options like 4x2 with Auto LSD, 4x4 with two-speed transfer case and A-TRAC, and full-time 4x4 with two-speed transfer case and center-lock diff, ensure that the Tacoma can handle any challenging terrain. This truck is built for adventure with a maximum ground clearance of 9.5 inches, a running ground clearance of 11 inches, and impressive approach, break over, and departure angles.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma is set to continue its dominance in the mid-size truck segment. With its powerful engine options, advanced technology, off-road capabilities, and enhanced interior functionality, this truck is ready to conquer both the urban jungle and the rugged wilderness. Stay tuned for more details, including pricing and availability, as the launch of the all-new Tacoma approaches.
