"If the feds bring a case against you, says Kenyette Barnes, they've done their homework."
The co-founder of #MuteRKelly tells Audacy Atlanta's Maria Boynton she doubts the defense at the singer's racketeering and sex abuse trial can undo what was laid out by the prosecution over the last 4 weeks. "I think the prosecution did an exemplary job at portraying their case. They brought credible witnesses."
The prosecution brought more than 40 witnesses.
Barnes, who lives in Atlanta, is also interested in Kelly's defense. She expects "they'll try to go after the victims' crebility." We need to move beyond this idea, says Barnes that" if you were in any way complicit, or it appeared that you wanted this", it's okay if you are abused.
Kelly contends that he is innocent of the charges against him.
When it comes to women of color 'people don't care'
Barnes, who says that she is a domestic-abuse advocate and legislative strategist around human trafficking, says one of the things that "Kelly did well," and one of the things she thinks "makes him a predator," is that "he knew the population of girls to do this to."
In comparison, she points to the very recent missing person's case of Gabby Petito. "All resources were put into place because they knew this was wrong and they had to do justice." Yet, when it comes to women and girls of color, Barnes says "people don't care" and "that's how he (Kelly) was able to get away with it for so long."
Barnes and Oronike Odeleye founded the #MuteRKelly campaign in 2017.
