In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman from Springfield, Illinois, was fatally shot by a responding deputy after she called 911 for help on July 6. This case has reignited conversations about police accountability and systemic issues within law enforcement agencies.
During a recent interview on The Rashad Richey Morning Show, Retired Master Sergeant, USAF Retired Baltimore Police Leon Taylor joined the program to discuss the disturbing details of the case, describing it as a cold-blooded murder.
Protests have erupted demanding justice for Ms. Massey, and civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, representing Massey's family, has been vocal about the need for accountability. In a statement, President Joe Biden also called for justice for Sonya Massey, highlighting the national attention this case has garnered.
Mr. Taylor, expressed his deep sorrow and anger, drawing parallels between Ms. Massey's fate and the potential vulnerability of his own family members. Mr. Taylor did not mince words, labeling the incident as murder committed by a deputy disguised in uniform.
Mr. Taylor emphasized the broader issues within policing, noting that once an officer acts outside the color of law, they should be treated as a criminal. He criticized the system that allowed Deputy Grayson to continue serving despite a history of problematic behavior. Grayson had been reassigned six times over six years, raising questions about the culture of accountability within police departments.
The discussion also touched on the economic aspects of policing. Mr. Taylor argued for higher pay for officers to attract individuals committed to making a career out of law enforcement, rather than those who see it as a fallback option. He suggested that professionalizing the industry through better compensation and rigorous training could improve the quality of officers.
Host Dr. Rashad Richey echoed these sentiments, calling for systemic changes and the need for federal intervention. He pointed out that federal funding is a crucial leverage point for enforcing nationwide standards in policing. Both he and Mr. Taylor stressed that this is an American issue that requires comprehensive solutions beyond individual department reforms.
