The re-imaging of the Atlanta Falcons offense is well underway under Arthur Smith when, in the last 10 days, the team added TE Lee Smith and RB Mike Davis.
It's becoming more and more clear that the plan on offense is going to be similar to what got Coach Smith the job coming from the Titans, a power-rush attack.
While we don't expect Mike Davis to be Derrick Henry, the question remains, can he be what Todd Gurley failed to be, a feature back?
John Fricke and Hugh Douglas take a look at the offensive additions of Davis and Smith (both Arthur and Lee) and how it sets up an identity for the offense.
“He’s not going to be Derrick Henry, a force to be reckoned with, backs like that burn out quick,” explains Hugh Douglas. “When you put that physical toll on yourself, Mike Davis is a 28-year-old back but more like 24 years old because he doesn’t have that wear and tear on his body.”
Obviously, Mike Davis is not Derrick Henry, nobody is. But how big an upgrade over Todd Gurley can he be?
Todd Gurley was supposed to come in and help in the pass game and he only had 25 catches last season. With the Panthers Mike Davis had 59 catches last season. Will he be used more in the pass game by Matt Ryan than Gurley was?
