Despite the Atlanta Falcons being seventh in total offense, fourth in rush offense, 10th in passing offense, and ninth in third down offense, the Falcons are 28th in scoring offense and 29th in red zone offense.
Why are the Falcons so good at moving the ball in between the 20 yard lines, but struggle putting the ball in the endzone, especially when they get in the redzone? The Morning Shift gave their thoughts earlier today, and believe Atlanta’s finesse offensive style isn’t built to be successful in the redzone.
“We’re finesse because of the personnel plus the scheme, and it works for us most of the time, until we get in the redzone, until we get in short yardage, then it goes away.” Mike Johnson said
The Falcons have one of the lighter offensive lines in the NFL, with the heaviest guy on Atlanta’s O-Line right now, not including the injured Kaleb McGary, being Matthew Bergeron at 315 pounds, so Beau Morgan was spot on when he said “your strength is not to line up and go straight forward” when talking about the Falcons offense.
When Beau asked Mike how this team can be better in short yardage situations, red zone scoring, and proving their physicality, Mike responded by saying he believes running some “gap schemes plays” utilizing “pulling guards” and “using extra blockers” would benefit the Falcons red zone and short yardage game.
With the personnel and scheme being finesse it’ll be interesting to see what Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson comes up with to remedy the Falcons redzone woes and inconsistent scoring because they won’t be able to accomplish the goals they want if the offense continues to struggle in the redzone the way it has and if the scoring remains inconsistent.
