Are the Falcons interested in adding another quarterback to the depth chart?

According to at least one Falcons insider, the team has expressed interest in 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo, who is widely believed to be available via trade.

In fact, the Falcons are "one of five" teams to have checked in with the Niners about the 30-year-old, eight-year veteran, according to Cam Marino.

Marino's report comes soon after it was reported that the 49ers had given Garoppolo and his agents permission to seek a trade out of San Francisco.

The former Patriot, once an understudy to Tom Brady in New England, seems to have been supplanted by 2021 first-round draft pick Trey Lance as the 49ers' long-term answer under center. San Francisco acquired Garoppolo from the Pats in a midseason trade in 2017.

After arriving in the Bay Area, Jimmy G went 31-14 as a starter and even led the Niners to Super Bowl LIV and last season's NFC title game, though he also missed substantial time due to injury in both 2018 and 2020.

For his career, the former Eastern Illinois star has thrown for 11,852 yards and 71 touchdowns with 38 interceptions, while completing 67.7% of his passes.

Meanwhile the Falcons are embarking on a new era at the quarterback position, following the offseason trade that sent franchise legend Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts. Atlanta has signed veteran backup Marcus Mariota and drafted former Cincinnati star Desmond Ridder in the third round as Ryan's potential replacements.

But it seems the Falcons may not be completely satisfied with those options. They emerged as a suitor and reported finalist in the Deshaun Watson trade sweepstakes, before he was ultimately dealt to the Cleveland Browns.
