Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. took 42.3% of his snaps from the pistol in Week 1, which was by far the most in the NFL, the next closest was Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts at 19.4%.
After seeing these numbers some Falcons fans and media members have attributed Atlanta’s offense looking predictable in week one against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Falcons heavy use of the pistol formation, but earlier today The Morning Shift explained why the Falcons heavy use of the pistol formation is not why the offense looks predictable right now.
“Lord knows I think I’ve been more critical of him [Zac Robinson] than anybody, his playcalling has been terrible. The imagination and the ingenuity behind his play calls have been bad, it’s not because of pistol though. It’s not because of pistol, it’s because he has refused to alter a lot of the things we’ve done.” Mike Johnson said
Predictability in the NFL doesn’t come from formations it comes from movements and motions, or lack there of, and it’s time for Atlanta Falcons Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson to add some as Mike said “imagination and the ingenuity” to his play calls or the Falcons’ offense will continue to struggle against the better defenses in the league, including a good Minnesota Vikings defense on Sunday night.
