Earlier this morning NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Atlanta Falcons are planning to release wide receiver Darnell Mooney, and The Morning Shift gave their reactions live on air.

“A guy that produced to the little amount that he did for an $18-million dollar cap hit, you gotta look at ways to move that” Beau Morgan said

Beau also said that he feels like Darnell played with “zero confidence” last season.

Mike Johnson also gave his take on the news and talked about how Mooney seemed to be the perfect fit for what the Falcons needed after his first season where he nearly had an 1,000-yard season, but his play just continued to regress in his second season with Atlanta.

“I thought he was a perfect fit for what the Falcons needed, needed somebody to take the top off a defense, but as his time progressed here his hands got less and less sure, his body type or his body I guess you could say really kind of dwindled, like it feels like he lost 20 pounds from one season to the next and just became so slight and slim and it seemed like the physicality of the game was a problem, so it’s frustrating to see it come to and end.”

Wide receiver was already a position of need for the Falcons even before the report came out about Atlanta’s plan to release about Mooney, but now the receiver position is arguably the top need for the Falcons as Drake London and Casey Washington will be the only contracted wide receivers left on the Falcons roster now following Darnell’s reported release.

Falcons General Manager Ian Cunningham and Falcons Head Coach Kevin Stefanski are clearly overhauling the WR room, and building it around London how they see fit, so the Falcons will be looking for new wide outs when free agency gets started with the legal tampering period next week, and in April’s NFL Draft as well.
