But even in the case of Tom Brady, we thought there was a line.
Apparently not.
In the fourth quarter of a Week 5 tilt between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and and Atlanta Falcons, defensive lineman Grady Jarrett seemingly recorded a key sack that would allow his team to get the ball back with a chance to take the lead. Instead, he was inexplicably called for roughing the passer, who was Brady:
Instead of Brady and the Buccaneers being forced to punt or go for a 4th-and-5 in their own territory, they were gifted a first down and 15 yards. Atlanta would never get the ball back, with the Buccaneers holding on to defeat the Falcons 21-15.
In some senses, Arthur Smith's Falcons should blame themselves, as they entered the fourth quarter trailing 21-0. However, they outscored Tampa Bay 15-0 in the final quarter, and should have had a chance to get the ball back. Instead, the Falcons drop to 2-3 on the season.
