When Matt Hennessy initially suffered a leg injury during a Falcons Training Camp practice on July 28th there was a feeling around the organization that it was not very serious, and that Hennessy wouldn’t miss much time.
However, it is now mid-August and the Falcons third round pick has yet to return to the practice field, and the feeling around how much time Hennessy might miss has changed.
Atlanta Falcons beat writer for The Athletic, Josh Kendall joined The Morning Shift earlier today and gave his thoughts on what Matt’s injury means for Atlanta’s offensive line room.
“There are gonna be some hard decisions to make at offensive line now with Matt Hennessy’s injury lingering longer than they thought.” Josh continued by saying “They’re gonna have to make a decision soon on Matt Hennessy’s surgery, or if Matt Hennessy’s gonna need surgery and what he’s gonna do, how he’s gonna handle this injury and he may be a guy who doesn’t end up on the 53-man roster.”
Falcons Head Coach, Arthur Smith, gives an update on Hennessy and the status of the offensive line room in the video above, but for a guy in Hennessy that played 13 games as a rookie, started all 17 games in 2021, and played in 11 games last season two weeks ago it would’ve been a shock too many people that Hennessy could have a realistic chance to not make the 53-man roster, but now this has become a serious possibility.
Coach Smith has said he feels good about the teams depth at the offensive line, and that’s the good news for the Falcons about this whole situation, but not good news for Matt Hennessy.
