Is Michael Penix Jr.'s confidence holding him back in Falcons camp?

When the Atlanta Falcons opened training camp, what was expected to be a competition for the starting quarterback role got off to a slow start, and to some extent, has yet to begin, as both Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa di not participate early on as Penix Jr. had yet to be cleared to be a full participant and Tagovailoa was dealing with back tightness.

Now heading into their first preseason game, Tagovailoa has been a full participant, taking 11 on 11 reps with the first team, while Penix Jr., who has yet to be cleared to be a full participant, has been seen with the first team in seven on seven drills.

On Tuesday, former NFL quarterback, Cam Newton released the latest episode of his “4th and 1” podcast in which Penix Jr. shared with him that while physically, he feels good enough to participate in all team drills, mentally, he wants to make sure he’s “100 percent” ready.

“I have to be honest with you guys, he’s doubting himself, which has me doubting him,” 92-9 The Game’s, Carl Dukes said as he and cohost, Mike Bell reacted to hearing Penix Jr.’s comments. “When you’re talking about coming back from a knee surgery, and you’re like ‘I’m good physically, but mentally’, let me tell you something, this game is mental,” Dukes said.
