It's roster cut-down day in the NFL as teams have until 4 p.m. ET to trim their current rosters down to 53.
There has been one shocking cut that no one saw coming: the Patriots releasing veteran quarterback Cam Newton.
Newton missed three days of practice last week because of Covid protocols. He was battling with New England rookie QB Mac Jones for the starting role.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons are making roster cuts of their own, and likely watching the quarterback cuts as well. After losing backup QB A.J. McCarron to an ACL injury for the season, their looking for a sufficient veteran to be behind Matt Ryan.

Should the Falcons consider signing Cam Newton as a backup?
"If Mac (Jones) was going to be a starter Day 1 (in New England), I'm was pretty sure that Cam could not be a backup," Randy McMichael said. "He doesn't have that personality. He's going to have to get it if he wants to continue to play."
The other reason why things are going to get complicated with Newton is that he's an un-vaccinated player. That's the reason why he had to wait five days to re-enter practice.

"I wonder what happens from here with Cam," Andy said. "I honestly do wonder if the Falcons take a look...but if Cam Newton doesn't have any interest in being a backup quarterback, bringing him on to your roster to be a backup quarterback seems like a recipe for a bad marriage."
