For Atlanta Falcons fans, the biggest news of the weekend was the team not releasing Kirk Cousins before the new league year deadline, thus triggering a $10 million roster bonus for the veteran quarterback, whom the Falcons made clear they had not intentions of cutting.

On Monday, during The Steakhouse, Drew Butler and Mark Zinno shared their thoughts on the Falcons retaining Cousins, noting the $10 million bonus would not be owed to Cousins until the 2026 season, therefore should the Falcons find a suitable trade partner which would allow them to move on from Cousins, his new team could possibly take on the $10 million bonus.

“As someone who’s been highly critical of Terry Fontenot, I don’t disagree with how he’s handling the Kirk Cousins situation at the moment,” Butler said as he explained why he believes at some point prior to Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season, there may be a franchise in need of a quarterback, which could potentially lead to a Cousins trade.

“A team will get desperate. Terry Fontenot has to hold his cards close to his chest, that now being Kirk Cousins, to allow somebody to come to him with an offer so he can get something in return,” Butler said as he shared his thoughts on why he believes ultimately, the Falcons made a good business decision in retaining Cousins.
