As the Atlanta Falcons move past the NFL Draft and start early preparations for the 2025 season, despite the uncertainty of whether Kirk Cousins will be on the 53-man roster when the regular season begins continues to loom, one known fact is Michael Penix Jr. will be the starting quarterback game one, however on Friday, Abe Gordon, who satin for Mike Bell shared some concerns about the second year signal caller.
“Do you know what he is,” Gordon asked Carl Dukes as he would later explain he was comfortable believing the Falcons would be division winners last season until Cousins was injured. Now heading into this season, despite three starts at the end of the 2024 season, Gordon would share with Dukes why he believes the sample size of Penix Jr.’s body of work as the Falcons quarterback is not large enough for him to feel comfortable about the second year QB.
“My concern is we don’t know what we have at quarterback and you can line up all the playmakers around him that you want, we’ve seen what having a team full of playmakers with Desmond Ridder and Marcus Mariota looks like,” Gordon said noting he is not convinced Penix Jr. is the “franchise guy that I have full faith in. I have questions,” Gordon added.
