(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Recreational marijuana may soon be legal in Illinois, but that doesn’t erase the fears that some have about the detrimental effects of cannabis.
Bucknell University neuroscientist Judy Grisel warns that all of the new state laws relaxing cannabis prohibitions have outpaced the science.
She said research suggests that intensive consumption of high-potency marijuana can cause irreversible psychosis.
“It can take you off course for a lifetime,” Grisel tells WBBM Newsradio’s Cisco Cotto.
She says a more general cognitive impairment is another risk pot-smokers face.
“One possible risk in the long term is that there’s going to be a dampening in sensitivity to what’s important. And this is maybe not so critical if you’re in your 50s like I am, but I think very critical in your teens, when most people are experimenting with drugs like THC.”
