(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago area eighth-grader is accused of mooning the camera and using a racial slur while interrupting remote online classes at two high schools on Tuesday.

A statement from Hinsdale High School District 86 says the eighth-grader's parents as well as police have been notified about the incidents.

The district also says steps are being taken to help prevent similar incidents from happening.

Michael Peshkin, a mechanical engineering professor at Northwestern University, said there are ways to reduce the risk of such interruptions.

Strategies include constantly changing meeting links and passwords; distributing those directly to students rather than posting them, and being prepared to end online classes immediately if someone manages to break in.

Peshkin says these types of incidents have been fairly common since the pandemic forced schools to switch to remote learning.
