CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There's some advice being offered Wednesday to people thinking about the day they return to work and about how to prevent separation issues in their dogs.
DuPage County Board Member Brian Krajewski said he's had it happen to him. He's left home after being around his dog for a long time and the dog becomes upset with separation anxiety.
"Some people, if they have cameras, they can look at their dogs when they're gone [and> they can see what they do in the house. You'll see, sometimes, they're potty-trained, yet they'll mess the house when you're gone. Or, you'll come home and find your favorite pair of shoes shredded or your baseball cap shredded. Those are examples that happened to me," he said.
Krajewski heads the DuPage County Board's Animal Services Committee. He said there are ways to prevent your dog from getting separation anxiety.
If your dog does show his or her separation anxiety in inappropriate ways, Krajewski said it's best not to yell at the dog. He saod it's estimated that 20-40 percent of dogs get it.
The DuPage County Board's Animal Services website has some other tips for easing your dog back to having you gone more.
