CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While a number of public school districts have elected to start the year with remote learning, some other schools are resuming in-person or hybrid instruction.
The Archdiocese of Chicago is going forward with full-time, in-person instruction at Catholic elementary and high schools.
One early childhood center has been open for two months. The Carole Robertson Center for Learning has two locations in Lawndale and Little Village. They reopened in late June and officials there said things have gone well.
Vice President of Programs Sonja Crumb Knight said several people have tested positive for COVID-19, but she added their mitigation plan prevented one positive person from causing an outbreak that would force a shutdown.
"It was a classroom. We had to shut down a classroom for the requisite 14 days. But at other times, because of the really stringent mitigation we practiced, we did not have to shut down and there was no outbreak," Crumb Knight said.
While some parents have expressed skepticism that children, especially young children, won't wear masks all day, Crumb Knight said the students at the Carole Robertson Center went along with the COVID-19 guidelines regarding masks and social distancing. She added that parents need to model good behavior for their children.
She said communication is key, and that her staffers were in touch with parents to talk about safety in the weeks leading up to the re-opening in June.
"Based on the concerns families shared with us, they were very much invested in preparing their children for the return," Crumb Knight said.
