CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lightfoot is cool to a proposal from a North Side alderman that would give a break to renters and homeowners who are in financial trouble because of the virus-related economic slowdown.

Forty-seventh Ward Ald. Matt Martin posted a video on his social media accounts Monday that spelled out his proposed ordinance and resolution.

He suggested small landlords and home owners should be given 90 days' forbearance from mortgage lenders. Tenants would get up to 12 months to catch up on rent.

At an event Monday, Mayor Lightfoot told reporters the issue was complicated.

She said any relief measure requires a comprehensive approach that includes pressing banks that hold mortgages to participate.
