CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Aldermen have given their preliminary approval for fines as high as $10,000 for drivers who engage in “Fast and Furious”-style drag racing and “drifting” in Chicago.

Downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly, lead sponsor of the ordinance, said he hopes the prospect of being socked with steep fines will prevent drivers from being reckless.

“Drifting” involves using a handbrake to make a skidding turn. Motorists have been known to do the dangerous stunts on Lower Wacker.

The proposed crackdown passed a Chicago City Council committee but must get the full council’s approval to go into effect.
