Aldermen: Pot Firm's Outreach To Minorities Too Little, Too Late

Chicago City Hall

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Plans to expand a marijuana dispensary on the North Side cleared a hurdle today, despite some complaints from minority aldermen.Cresco Labs, which already has medical marijuana dispensaries, needs zoning approval to move one North Side location to larger quarters, near Wrigley Field, to accommodate the new recreational pot business.

But some aldermen, like the West Side's Walter Burnett, criticized company officials for a lack of minority investors and partners in an industry that causes some harm.

Lakeview Ald. Tom Tunney pointed out the company did recently start a program to bring minorities into the business.Burnett said he's not impressed. He asked what the company was doing before the last several months to help minorities.

The Zoning Committee approved the zoning change by a relatively narrow vote of 7-5.
