ALGONQUIN, ILL. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Longtime Algonquin Village President John C. Schmitt has died.
Schmitt was first elected to the board as a village trustee in 1993, according to the Village of Algonquin website. He was appointed as president in 2002 following the death of his predecessor Salvatore "Ted" Spella. Schmitt was elected to his first full term in 2005 and was recently re-elected in 2017. His current term runs through 2021.
Colleagues called him a fabulous leader and a fabulous citizen who was passionate about local politics, his family, and his grandchildren.
“President Schmitt’s love and passion for Algonquin was undeniable,” the village’s website stated.
Though the cause of death has not been released the village’s website described it as “sudden.”
