CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some aspiring local chefs got a helping hand from the industry during a luncheon today.

The Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation awarded $180,000 in scholarships to 84 local students.

It's part of an effort to remove barriers for future workers, says Executive Director Terrell Johnson.

One of the winners is Miracle Fentry, who will attend Robert Morris in the fall and hopes to be a personal chef one day.

She says she enrolled in the culinary program at her high school on Chicago's West Side for fun but now uses cooking as an escape.

Johnson said students are evaluated on a number of criteria and the foundation has given out $3 million over the years.

The winners are from all over the state and are pursuing hospitality and culinary educations at 37 colleges and universities.
