CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Monday will mark two weeks since 200 residents of an Aurora shelter left the facility due to some COVID-19 tests that came back positive.
Residents of Hesed House in Aurora are entering their third week in a hotel – a move designed to control the spread of COVID-19.
Ryan Dowd, executive director at Hesed House, told WBBM there have been some challenges among them, having to bring items to rooms whenever needed since residents can’t leave those rooms.
“It really came to a head, we told the state that we just didn’t have the staffing to do this and they provided National Guard troops and so that just has been an enormous blessing. So, the National Guard now provides that logistical support. So, they run food up to rooms and any needs up to rooms and then our staff – Hesed House staff – focus on mental health needs and crisis de-escalation – and stuff that we’re particularly good at,” said Dowd.
Tests have come back positive for three residents and three staff members of Hesed House. Right now, the plan is to move the homeless from the hotel back to Hesed House on May 11.
