CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Veterans Day was observed Monday at Aurora’s City Hall despite a planned parade being cancelled because of the weather.Aurora’s Mayor, Army veteran Richard Irvin, explained to those who gathered why the parade was called off.

“To have our senior veterans outside…would be irresponsible…although, I know every veteran in this room has the grit to be able to handle it," he said.

There was a different kind of keynote address offered by Aurora native, Naval Academy grad and former Navy pilot Rudy Rodriguez as he had veterans and their supporters stand.

“I’m going to ask you to close your eyes…stand the way you stood…think back to those moments when you were deployed…in boot camp…whatever that moment was for you,” he said.
